Hvar is a port and resort town on the Croatian island of Hvar. Yachts fill its harbour in summer. The town has narrow cobbled streets between historic buildings.   This historic town was originally part of the Venetian Empire.  From the 13th to 18th centuries, it was an important naval base with a strong fortress, and town walls.  The seven-hundred-year-old walls still survive, as do many of the noble houses and public buildings from 15th – 17th centuries.  Hvar is the site of one of the oldest surviving theatres in Europe, opened in 1612. . The island has secluded beaches. Hula Hula Beach in Hvar and Stipanska Beach on Marinkovac Island are known for their nightlife and lively bars.  The town has an excellent catamaran service during the summer months. Croatia’s main ferry line, Jadrolinija, also runs an excellent service out of season. Stari Grad ferry port offers excellent communication to Split on the mainland. There is a good selection of ferries running daily, operated by Jadrolinija.
